Credit Card Grrl

The 411 on the marketing side of the credit card industry

20060829

What would Ben Edelman say?

Skimmed an opinion piece in Ad Age suggesting that confident marketers will win in Web 2.0 (from SmartBrief). Made me wonder what Edelman would think:

- Are advertisers supporting hate if user generated content includes hateful messaging? I mean, after all, it's ad dollars that pay for the servers that host the hateful messaging, right?

- If an advertiser's banner is next to a bulletin board post rife with expletives ... are there neighborhood issues surrounding this?

I'm sure Edelman would cite some legislation or Attorney General POV. I'm more interested in what the role of advertisers vis a vis Web 2.0 properties should be (prescriptive) and less interested in what lawyers (and other people who don't actually live and breathe online marketing) rattle off as the current state of affairs (descriptive).

Thoughts?

AmEx kills double points on EDS

Sent to publishers of the NCS subaffiliate network on July 14:

**Tribute MasterCard**

We are very excited to announce the new Tribute MasterCard. With this card, your customers can get an immediate response to their application and begin building or rebuilding their credit today! This credit card is an unsecured card that performs best when marketed to individuals with a Fair to Good credit history. The Tribute® MasterCard® Card gives you the ability to offer your visitors an unsecured gold card with online approval.

Payout: $20/approval
Card categories:
- Rebuild credit
- Unsecured
- Fair credit

**American Express**

Three benefits of the Preferred Rewards Gold Card and the Preferred Rewards Green Card have been eliminated from the product offering and are no longer available to new Cardmembers. This change is effective immediately. Please update your sites and remove any reference to the following product benefits no later than Monday, July 17, 2006.

- Earn Double Membership Rewards points on Everyday Spend at drug stores, super markets, wireless phone bills, etc. (Preferred Gold Rewards and Preferred Green Rewards Card)
- Best Value Guarantee (Preferred Gold Rewards Card only)
- Free Shipping and Handling (Preferred Gold Rewards Card only)

Although these benefits are no longer available, please be sure to communicate the continued benefits of both the Preferred Gold Rewards and Preferred Green Rewards cards such as:

Preferred Gold Rewards
- First Year Fee Free
- 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points after first purchase
- Purchase Protection Plan
- Access to Gold Card Events
- American Express Preferred Rewards Travel Service
- Online Fraud Protection Guarantee

Preferred Green Rewards
- First Year Fee Free
- 5,000 bonus Membership Rewards points after first purchase
- American Express Preferred Rewards Travel Service
- Online Fraud Protection Guarantee

This seems odd. If there had not been 2x on EDS, I never would have used my green or gold cards. Then again, if there had not been FYF, I never would have gotten them in the first place (and then promptly cancelled)...

This guy hates MBNA

Popped up as an ad in my gmail:

We can live without MBNA

I love consumers angry enough to buy Google adwords. I've considered buying similar adwords for exes back when I used to be super-crazy-grrl.com.

Any other examples of riled up consumers out there?

Credit documentary

In March I received an email from an acquaintance, a woman who recently authored a book covering, among other topics, consumer credit. She wrote:

Hope you're doing well. Things here have been a whirlwind, but in a good way.
I was interviewed last week for a feature documentary titled "(snip)". Their tagline is "the Supersize Me of the credit industry". They have interviewed a lot of financial experts and it strikes me that it's going to be a good project.

During the interview, they asked me about the line I quote from you in the book *snipped*. I didn't reveal anything else about your identity or about our interview, but they asked me if I would give you their contact information in case you were interested in being interviewed or knew someone else in the industry who might be.
So, here is the producer's email, which explains what they are looking for. Again, they don't have a clue who you are, and you're under no obligation to respond, but I just wanted to do them a favor because they are nice guys.
Thanks, all best,

The email that she forwarded from the producer of this documentary of "the Supersize Me of the credit industry" wrote to her as follows:

Thanks again for making time to be interviewed for the documentary. Before contacting your agent, I happened to catch your appearance with Tucker Carlson and was hooked by your passion, depth, and initiative in addressing what you believe. Although no encouragement is needed from me, this world will be a better place if / when more discover your path.

In speaking with Brad (and you, this morning), I understand that you may know of someone who would be willing to offer some insider perspective on the tactics and practices of credit card companies. I've been able to locate a recent, former V.P of Visa who headed up many of the turn-key marketing programs utilized by the banks and he is willing to speak with us in the coming weeks. His perspective, however, is more to explaining and justifying what was done...and why. Also, he has little direct knowledge of the banking side of the credit industry.

A particular area of interest we're addressing is credit's push into the youth market - college campuses and even high schools. The debate seems to focus on how credit should be made available for students and young people - i.e.- What tactics are kosher and how much disclosure and financial literacy should be required? Many argue that, with the help of a well-lobbied Congress, banks and credit card companies have been handed free rein to travel the low road on this and other critical consumer credit issues.

(name snipped), we're hoping to find someone from the banking side who has intimate knowledge of what goes on and is willing to speak up for the side that says, 'these practices are predatory and they're wrong and a lot of people are being indiscriminately targeted and needlessly harmed.'

If you should know of any who would be willing to be interviewed, we are prepared to conceal identities and disguise voices, should they wish.

Again, thank you for taking time with us. Your perspective and input were/are invaluable.

Best regards and continued successes,

(name snipped)
Producer - (title snipped)

Here's what I find shifty: a documentary that is looking to stack the deck with bias by actively looking for someone who will say exactly what the producers want them to say.

How exactly is that an unbiased portrait of the landscape?
How is that different from a big marketing pitch?
How is that different from an advertisement?

With regards to the perceived premise of this documentary, I loathe the assumption that American consumers are idiots. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Reading the fine print?

Whatever happened to not being a dumbass?

Are all documentaries so biased??

Search Ignite

Looks like American Express' consumer credit card group uses Search Ignite for their paid search management campaign work. Wonder if this is a direct relationship or if they work with them through Digitas.
