Chase Flexible Rewards(SM) Visa(R) Signature Card

Got a DM piece for this card. Boring OE.

Johnson box: You are Pre-Approved(1) for a Visa(R) Card. 0% FIXED intro APR | No Annual Fee
on balance transfers until August 1, 2007
Plus, no balance transfer fees with this offer!

Not sure why no BT fees is a big deal as I never get BT fees on intro offers. Strange.

There's a one-fold full color insert and it talks about Flexible Rewards(SM). Overall, this package is ultra-wonky. Poorly designed, unclear messaging ... I'm not impressed. Then again, I hate Chase. (Uh oh, there go my affiliate links ...)

Capital One(R) Visa(R) Business Platinum Card with No Hassle Miles(SM)

Got a direct mail solicitation from Cap One. Boring OE. Fake card plastic with imprint included.

Johnson box: Zero interest on every purchase until May 2007
Plus, earn miles good on any airline

Call-out graphic box labelled "no hassle fact pact(SM)" offers clear, easy-to-read details with graphic symbols:

% > APRs
Now until May 2007 - Balance Transfers: 0%; Purchases: 0%
After May 2007 - Balance Transfers: Variable, now 9.9% - 19.8%; Purchases: Variable, now 9.9% - 19.8%. Determined upon approval.

+
Annual Fees: None
Balance Transfer Fee: None

$ > Credit Line
$500 - $20,000
Determined upon approval

(Graph graphic) How your actions could affect your APRs
Unlike some companies, we won't increase your APRs because you pay late only once, you go over your credit limit, or your credit record changes with another lender.
We may increase your APRs if you pay late twice in 12 billing periods.

I like this clear and direct approach. Nicely done, Cap One. Now, why you are sending a DM piece to a business that has yet to file taxes (oops) is beyond me.

If you were my friend ...

Here's some advice I recently sent to a friend of mine. He's redeeming all his Chase points and wants to switch to a new issuer because Chase jacked up his APRs. He wants to transfer balances but also likes the idea of getting free stuff. Here's what I recommended to him:

if you get approved for this (my last friend didn't -- i think citi is blacklisting my friends) my reco is to

1. transfer all outstanding credit card balances to the card immediately
2. hide card in sock drawer
3. write down in your calendar to be sure to pay off the entire balance in eleven months
4. be sure to pay the min due every month on time (otherwise you'll get totally jacked)
5. once you pay everything off in 11 months, use this card for big-ticket items that you'll want to "revolve", or, not pay off in full. this card will have the lowest interest rate.

if you are still considering platinum cards from other card issuers, let me know -- i will explain why citi's is the lead horse.

once you get the "value" card taken care of, step two is to get a rewards-based card. the important questions to consider are

1. What do you spend a larger than average % of your money on
2. What kind of free stuff do you want

My sense is that the two most likely candidates for you are either the Professional Card or the PremierPass Card. I carry both. Professional Card gives you 3 points for every dollar spent on restaurants; PremierPass gives you 1 point for every 2 miles you fly on any airline. Both earn you points for every dollar spent that you can redeem for within the ThankYou network. you can learn more at:

professional card

premierpass card (NOT the elite level)

Of course with these cards as well (or ANY of your cards) you'll want to be sure you're paying on time. If you miss a payment on Card X in your wallet, any bank has the right to jack up your APR on any of your cards, EVEN the cards you paid on time -- and that would include any card you've transferred a large balance to.
